Consumer Unit Upgrades & Fuse Board Replacement — London & Kent

Your consumer unit — commonly called a fuse box or fuse board — is the heart of your home's electrical system. If yours is more than 20 years old, made of plastic (non-metal), or uses old-style fuses instead of modern circuit breakers, it almost certainly no longer meets current electrical safety standards.

DM Electrotechnical Services Ltd upgrades consumer units to modern RCD (Residual Current Device) boards across London and Kent. All work is NAPIT certified, completed in a single day, and covered by a full manufacturer's warranty. Finance is available through Klarna and Clearpay — spread the cost with zero interest.

Signs your consumer unit needs replacing

Your fuse box is wooden, or the fuses are wire-based rather than plastic circuit breakers.

Circuit breakers trip frequently without obvious cause.

You have had an EICR that flagged the consumer unit as C2 or C1.

You are planning an extension, loft conversion, or adding significant new appliances (EV charger, hot tub, electric shower) — your current board may not have enough capacity.

Your home insurance company has flagged the fuse board as a risk.

You are selling your property and buyers or surveyors have raised it.

There is a burning smell near the fuse board, or visible signs of overheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?

A standard domestic consumer unit upgrade takes 4–6 hours. During the work, the power supply to your home will be off. We carry out the work as efficiently as possible to minimise disruption. In most cases, power is restored by early afternoon when we start in the morning.

Do I need an EICR before a consumer unit upgrade?

We will carry out a basic condition check as part of the upgrade process. If your installation has not had a recent EICR, we may recommend one — particularly for older properties — as it can identify additional remedial work that is easier to address at the same time as the board upgrade.

What is the difference between RCD and RCBO consumer units?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) board protects circuits in groups. An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection) board gives each circuit its own individual protection — meaning if one circuit trips, all others remain live. RCBO boards are more expensive but significantly more convenient in modern homes.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. Every consumer unit upgrade is completed with a BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), which is your legal proof of compliance. As NAPIT members, we notify Building Control on your behalf — you don't need to do anything.
